ECOLOGICALLY RESPONSIBLE TIMBER MANAGEMENT IN CLAYOQUOT SOUND
(March 1996. 4.56 mb zip file. 79 pages, 16 colour photos, 18 colour diagrams, 7 B&W tables.)

This report was prepared by Silva Ecosystem Consultants for presentation at the Clayoquot Symposium on alternative silviculture systems, held in Ahousaht, British Columbia, March 6-8, 1996. The objective of the symposium was to discuss alternatives to clearcutting in old growth temperate rainforests on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The symposium was hosted by the Clayoquot Working Group, and organized by MacMillan Bloedel Ltd.

The symposium format called for a group of individuals and organizations with technical expertise to visit three proposed logging areas selected by the Clayoquot Working Group. The three sites were selected to represent a range of forest and topographic conditions in Clayoquot Sound. The sites were also chosen because they were reasonably accessible for the workshop participants to visit, and have had development work carried out by MacMillan Bloedel and Interfor Ltd. The symposium organizers have noted that restrictions in the Coastal Watershed Assessment Guidelines, the Forest Practices Code, and the Clayoquot Scientific Panel Recommendations, may in fact prevent these sites from being logged in the near future. However, the organizers hoped that these sites could be used for a conceptual discussion of silvicultural practices that could be applied to other sites where logging is appropriate.
