Rod Blake
standing in one of Woodlot W0588's biodiversity reserves.
The stand of dry-site Douglas-fir shown here was selected
as a reserve primarily due to frequent wildlife sightings.

A view
of Buchanan Lake, with one of Woodlot W0588's biodiversity
reserves on the left. The reserve is a relatively productive
Douglas-fir/lodgepole pine type adjacent to the lake, and
as such provides important habitat values.
In this dry area, this wetland feature is particularly important
for wildlife. |
The
overstory of a dry, overstocked Douglas-fir/lodgepole pine
stand that has already been thinned, with approximately 15%
volume removed.
This type of prescription will move the stand to a lower density
that is more in keeping with the natural character of the
dry forest. |
 |
The
main haul road for Woodlot W0588.
Throughout the woodlot, roads are very narrow and curved as
necessary to fit the terrain. Engineering and surfacing are
of a very high quality, ensuring stability and minimal forest
degradation over time. |

A narrow
road constructed along an old railway grade in Woodlot W0082.
Roads are constructed to very high standards and are designed
as permanent features.

A small
excavator is modified for selection logging through a grapple
arm and a long-line winch.
Pulling logs to the trail with the winch minimizes soil disturbance.
The wide tracks of the excavator minimize soil compaction
by distributing the weight of the machine over a larger area.

Skid
trail that winds through a stand of Douglas-fir and spruce
on Woodlot W0550.
The stand has been selectively logged. This trail, as with
all skid trails on the Krimmers' woodlot, is very narrow (less
than 3 m wide) and features little soil disturbance or compaction.
|
Stand
structure following logging in a multi-layer Douglas-fir stand
in the south-western portion of Woodlot W0550.
This cut was performed in 1995 and the pattern used was single-tree
removal. This stand is in a mule deer winter range, where
the high canopy retention helps to provide sheltered conditions
for deer during the harsh winter months.
|
A
large, old Douglas-fir tree contrasted with surrounding younger
forest in the southern portion of Woodlot W0550.
This will be one of the Krimmers' permanent leave trees, and
is an obvious remnant of a past stand condition characterized
by ground fire and more widely-spaced large trees. |
